O.K. Now that I’ve got your attention – not all Internet Marketing Gurus are scammers, in fact some may honestly want you to succeed. However the reputation as “Used Car Salesmen of the Web” (no offense meant to used car salesmen) is well deserved among many of these people who sell cookie cutter products designed to fit every business model – though poorly.
Over the years I have heard all types of complaints about these guys from clients who dropped large sums of money for information that can be freely obtained with a few Google searches. The truth is that no one can create a product that fits every business well and the marketing pitches aren’t upfront with the potential buyers about the work involved to be successful.
Case In Point – TV pitchman Don Lapre arrested 24 hours after dodging court appearance over ‘$52million fraud’. Perhaps Don did not do anything illegal, hopefully the legal system will provide justice not retribution. Since the true facts of the case are contained in court and police records, we shouldn’t be to quick to pronounce guilt. Don’s real problem was his greed and marketing strategy; it’s easy to sell to people who want instant success but don’t understand the work involved to get there. If he had spent a little less time pitching to people who he knew wouldn’t succeed (even though they had the potential) and a little more time informing his “marks” he wouldn’t be finding himself in this mess.
There are two lessons to take home here – one for the consumer and one for the Internet Entrepreneur. For the Consumer: Look before you leap; don’t fall for the hype, pay attention to the details and decide if you truly have the motivation to succeed. If you decide to buy a product or service that promises to make you BIG $ be certain to tailor it to your business because cookie cutters are designed for dough not businesses.
For the Entrepreneur: High pressure sales are tempting because of the easy quick cash but they always fail in the long run. In real life high pressure salesmen have high return rates and bad reputations. Take the time and provide quality products and services that benefit the consumer as well as your wallet.
